Customs Clearance Clerk

 One of our clients is looking for an important addition to their team, a Customs Clearance Clerk, who will work as part of a team and report to the Customs Manager.  Involved in the calculation and processing of excise duties and taxes.

 Responsibilities:

  • Processing of excise duties and taxes on behalf of clients
  • Required to sign documents under a Power of Attorney on behalf of clients, pay, or arrange for payment of taxes and duties
  • Liaising with Purchasing Department
  • Inputting details in systems like CES and Intrastat, NSO
  • Allocating the correct licence depending on type of goods being imported
  • Attending meetings with Customs Officials for the application of duty refunds and tariff reclassification, also assist with any possible appeals
  • This job also requires you to liaise with officials in various agencies to ensure goods are cleared through customs or quarantine. Arrange for transportation and liaise with freight forwarders
  • Ensure good upkeep and maintenance of records

Key skills and requirements

  • You will be required to be fully conversant with import and export laws and regulations, and keep yourself up-to-date, so as to be able to advise purchasing department amongst others, on import and export restrictions, tariff systems, insurance requirements and all other customs related matters
  • Previous experience in a similar role is an asset
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbally
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, due to dealing with various agencies
  • Complex problem solving and the ability to engage critical thinking skills will be required as well as the ability to actively listen and interpret concisely
  • Although you will work as part of a team, the role needs someone who is self-motivating and able to organise work effectively
  • Computer literate, good knowledge of Windows and Microsoft
